India saw a single-day increase of 16,326 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total to 3,41 59,562 as of Saturday.

Here are the top 10 developments on coronavirus cases in India

  1. Daily Covid deaths increased today after Kerala added 292 deaths from previous periods; less than the southern state has reported 271 deaths in the past 24 hours. India has reported more than 4.53 lakh of deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. Daily cases remain well below 50,000 (for 118 consecutive days) and 30,000 (for 29 consecutive days).

  2. Red flags were raised, however, during a surge of cases in Bengal after the Durga Puja celebrations; cases went from 451 to 833 in seven days. Experts are particularly concerned as several of the new cases are asymptomatic, suggesting more could be infected in the past 24 hours, the state has recorded 846 cases.

  3. Kerala has reported more than 9,000 cases in 24 hours. Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu each reported more than 1,000. The other major contributor to daily new cases was Mizoram with 745 reported. These four have the highest active workloads of any state.

  4. Overall, active cases now account for around 0.51% of total infections – the lowest since March of last year. The recovery rate is 98.16 percent – the highest since the same time. There have been 17,677 recoveries in the past 24 hours, the health ministry said.

  5. As the number of active cases increases, the declining states continue to slowly reopen; Maharashtra said cinemas, theaters and auditoriums can open at 50% of their capacity. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said limit could be increased if things got under control after Diwali

  6. Over 68.48 doses of lakh vaccine have been administered in the past 24 hours. According to CoWIN, nearly 40 lakh of them was the second of the two required doses. The total number of vaccines administered in the country is over 101.3 crore.

  7. India administered its billionth vaccine on Thursday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the nation the next day, said it was “not just a number” but a symbol of the country’s capacity and a “new India”. Critics of India have been silenced, the prime minister said.

  8. The opposition Congress, however, accused the Prime Minister of having misled the country. The party pointed to data indicating that only 21% were fully vaccinated – a far cry from the government’s promise to vaccinate 60% by December.

  9. Microsoft founder Bill Gates yesterday congratulated India for administering more than 100 crore, or 1 billion doses of the vaccine. Mr Gates called it “a testament to India’s innovation, its ability to manufacture at scale and the efforts of millions of health workers.”

  10. Regarding vaccines, the World Health Organization has still not granted Bharat Biotech an EUL, or emergency use list, which is needed for other countries to recognize Covaxin as a vaccine.
